5 Steps to Creating a Social Media Marketing Plan for Your Small Business

I spent a great amount of time these past ninety days talking with small business owners about online marketing. I quickly learned that more than 90% of those businesses truly understand the power of online marketing. 80% of those business owners don’t know where to begin and most don’t have the time or resources to invest to make it work.

One of the great things about social media marketing is that it’s been around long enough that there is an abundance of research available online. How do you know where to start or which path is the best for your business? Here are five steps that work for any small business (at least in the getting started phase).

  1. Identify your goal. Before you begin any new strategy it is critical you identify a goal. What do you want to happen as a direct result of your social media marketing? Do you want to increase your online audience? Do you want to increase sales? Do you want to be considered a thought leader in your industry? Or do you want to provide an outlet for existing customers to interact with your brand and increase retention? Each of these requires different tactics to accomplish. Setting your goal, in the beginning, makes the rest of the steps manageable.
  2. Map your strategy. Putting pen to paper is powerful. It’s the best method to create a plan that works. How will you reach your audience? Blogs, Memes, videos? When will you deliver the content? These best way I have found to successfully deliver content is by creating a content calendar.
  3. Make it personal. Personalized marketing is the only way to successfully grab your audience’s attention. Make sure you are willing to deliver personal messages from the heart to better reach your audience. When possible – personalize it with their name and city.
  4. Create valuable content. Valuable content is the only way to remain relevant online. Today, newsfeeds are overrun with information. Make sure your content is something your audience NEEDS to hear. Solve their daily problems and struggles – don’t make it about you and your business. It’s all about the customer.
  5. Track your results. After you pass go, track the results of your goal. What takes you one step closer and what pushes you back? If you see too many negative results, tweak your message and content.

Don’t be overwhelmed by the world of social media marketing. Simplify and manage it with these five steps.
