Spring Clean Your Website’s SEO

Just as spring is an excellent time to do a thorough cleaning of your house, it’s also the perfect time to clean up and refresh your website.  Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the most powerful pillar to your online presence and is critical to improving your ranking.  Here are 6 things on your spring cleaning to-do list to maximize SEO:

Get started

The right supplies/equipment are necessary for deep cleaning and the same goes for cleaning up your website.  Installing Google Analytics will provide you with useful information in tracking your users:  where are they coming from, how did they find your site, who is contacting you, and where might you be losing visitors on your site (at what point are they clicking off).

Clear a path

A clear path makes navigating house clutter easier.  Likewise, checking your site map helps Google and other search engines know how to easily navigate and index your website.

Sweep out the cobwebs

Sweeping out the cobwebs from forgotten corners of your home makes a big difference.  Checking the links on your website for forgotten and possibly broken links and then repairing them has the same effect on your SEO.  Whether your content has links to other areas on your site or to outside pages, if you don’t check them often or they are there too long, they can disappear resulting in a broken link. Clean up/update broken links to ensure your site’s effectiveness.

Organize your closets

Organizing your closets increases storage space and helps you find what you need much quicker.  Registering your website with Google Search Console has a similar effect:  indexing of your website by Google will improve your ranking when you add new content.

Out with the old; in with the new

When was the last time you replaced broken appliances with new, energy-efficient ones, OR kicked that old, uncomfortable couch to the curb for a beautiful sectional with more seating? Not only is spring a great time to update your home’s contents, it’s also the ideal time to add/update your website’s content.  When was the last time you added new content?  Be honest—was it recently or months ago?  Adding valuable content to your site every month will increase your ranking, provide more information for your existing customers, and attract new ones.  By being a constant source of new information, you’ll have a better chance to meet your current customers where they are in their purchase journey with you.

 Spruce up your curb appeal

Spring cleaning doesn’t stop at the inside of your home—the outside also needs attention. Sprucing up your website’s images—photos and graphics—through an image review is key.  Make sure they have image text assigned to each one that is keyword-focused/keyword-specific.  This tells the search engine what the photo is about and helps improve ranking and search results.
