4 Simple Steps to Defining Your Brand

As a business owner, you know that having a brand that stands out is essential. This is especially the case with the prevalence of social media and the visual aspect of online marketing.  Customers want to know about your business and what you stand for. Many of my clients ask me how to best create their brand, and even more importantly how to figure out what that is.  Here are 4 simple steps to defining your brand.

  1. Write down some words that others would use to describe you

The biggest takeaway for this step is what words would people use to search for you on Google? Self-reflection can be hard so if you need to ask people in your life for help with this that is okay. Think about how you want your customer to feel when they do business with you. This could be loyal, honest, efficient, determined, or anything else that you can think of that you want to portray.

  1. How would your existing customers describe you to their best friend

A great source of help in defining your brand is actually your current customers!  The best business almost always comes from referrals so you want to have a brand that makes your customers talk about you with excitement and confidence to those in their lives. Don’t be afraid to ask them their opinion when defining your brand.

  1. Why do customers choose you

Regardless of what you offer there is always competition and easy ways for customers to find what they need.  So, why is the customer going to choose you over your competitors?  What value are you offering? Watch for a future blog where I break this down into 4 steps as well.

  1. How does your brand align with your overall values in your personal life

Social media has made it so that we can see what is going on behind everyone’s personal lives, including businesses, at any given time of the day.  Your customer is going to love seeing what you do behind the scenes. They want to know about YOU, not just always about business.  What you do in your free time, if you are a parent, if you volunteer, even if you struggle.  It helps to humanize your business by showing this side periodically. Does your brand reflect the same values that you honor day to day?
