The lifeblood of any business is its website which serves many purposes. It’s an online brochure about who you are and what your business is. It’s a way to show content that positions you as an expert in your field. Over the past few years, websites have become the first step in a customer’s journey.

The key to a successful website is making it work for you. Optimizing your website helps you accomplish this. Let’s take a look at what every entrepreneur should know when it comes to optimizing a website.

 

Track and analyze data

“Data speaks,”’ as the saying goes. One great way to optimize your website is to understand how it is currently working for you. You should already have the very popular and free tracker, Google Analytics, installed on your website. It analyzes how visitors arrive at your site and what actions they take once there. This will give you a clear indication of what services or products they are looking for. Additionally, you can tell how long they spend on a page which is also a clue to whether your message resonates with them.

 

Define goals

Armed with data, you now need to establish some clear goals. These goals should be sales-oriented and geared toward conversions on your products or services. It is helpful to revisit these goals quarterly at a minimum. Analyze the data as often as monthly but reset goals quarterly based on your compiled data.

 

Use visuals

Text is good, but recent studies show that people tend not to be drawn into text only. Visuals are a must for any modern website. People love watching videos, browsing pictures, and learning from well-designed infographics. Visual marketing helps break up your text and makes it much easier and more pleasant for people to consume. It also makes it easier for your website visitors to read through the entire page and eventually make it to your call to action. Images and videos are much easier to share as well. People are more inclined to share a catchy video or an intriguing infographic than a simple page link.

 

Change a little at a time

If you notice some content on your site is not working quite the way you want, then changing it is something to do. However, don’t make massive changes at once. Update smaller portions of a page. Switch out some text for a video or an infographic. Then, go back and analyze your data and see the impact the changes had. Making small incremental changes over time will pay big dividends!
