5 Tips for Taking Product Photos

Selling your products online is a great way to reach customers who cannot visit your store in person. For effective online listings, you’ll need quality photos of your products. But, with no photography experience, it might be hard to figure out how to get the perfect image. Here are some tips to help you:

Use a shadowbox

You have to consider the background and lighting when you take the photo. Good lighting ensures that your product is visible, while a good background ensures it looks professional. However, finding the correct options can be difficult for a beginner.

An easy way to avoid potential problems is by using a shadow box. A shadow box is a lot like what it sounds like: a box with an all-white background, lit from overhead to avoid shadows. You can construct your own or buy one online.

Try multiple angles

Make sure the product is angled so consumers can see it clearly. Try taking photos from multiple angles or fiddling with the camera’s settings. It might seem like overkill, but it makes it easier for you in the editing stage to create a great final product. You never know what setting or angle might produce the perfect picture. Remember, you can easily delete what you don’t use, but taking more might be difficult.

Mark where your product stands

If you’re shooting more than one product, it is best to place the products in the same spot every time. After you take a photo of the first product, mark where it stood with a piece of tape or a small pencil mark. As a result, your final photos will be uniform.

Consider a tripod

A tripod helps take steady photos. It isn’t a necessary tool, but it can make your job easier. If your hands are shaky, it could affect the quality of the photos and make them blurry. A tripod will hold your camera steady; all you have to do is press the button.

Use extra lighting

Though the shadowbox helps with lighting, you still may need extra. For example, you could use natural light from a window to save money. Or you could purchase a ring light or a special photography bulb. If you’re having problems with shadows after using a shadowbox, extra lighting will likely help.

With these tips in mind, you should be able to take photos for online listings. However, if product photography still sounds mind-boggling, we can help. Feel free to reach out to us at Fuhrman Creative to see how we can help you market your products.
