Content marketing. All the experts say to incorporate it into your business strategy, so you finally took the plunge and made it happen – you started a blog on your website. You’ve written about a handful of topics and are pretty proud of your work. There is only one problem.
Nobody is reading your blog posts.
There is nothing more frustrating than putting the time and effort into a component of your business and seeing nothing in return. However, don’t give up on your blog just yet. We have some suggestions to enhance your blog posts and engage readers.
It’s all about the title.
To literally start at the beginning, let’s talk titles. While you don’t want to lose readers’ trust with “clickbait,” you will need to catch their attention. The title is the first thing a person reads, so you want to hook them from the start. Titling a blog with themes like “How to…” or “5 Easy Ways to Start…” is a great place to start. Today’s readers want their information fast and easy, so make it known that’s the goal from the start.
Note that coming up with a title is sometimes the most challenging part of blog writing. Don’t be afraid to write the article first, then title it later. You might become inspired after putting some words on the page.
Don’t be afraid of subheadings.
Notice how each “tip” within this blog is bolded with a subheading? That’s because it makes the article easier to read. People don’t often read full articles – they like to scan and find the piece that interests them. This will make life easier for potential readers and will help you, as the writer, organize your thoughts.
Understand your readers.
Even if you haven’t developed a core group of readers, you should know the audience you are trying to entice. Age, occupation and general interests factor into a person’s reading style. If you are trying to reach a younger demographic, keep things short, sweet, and to the point – numbered lists are great! If you’re writing for people in the technology industry, consider your details. Generally, these are people who like to understand in-depth information, so don’t hesitate to give people what they want.
Develop your own style.
While people like information, they also want to be entertained – let them enjoy what they are reading. The more blogs you write, the better you will develop your skills and showcase your personal style. As you grow your audience, they will know what to expect from you, such as humor, great detail, personal anecdotes, etc. In time, you’ll engage with your readers personally and ultimately leave them wanting more.
