These days, we must put time and energy into our social media profiles to stay in front of our audience. We all know what it means to strategically plan the next couple of weeks and craft beautiful, snappy posts promoting our business and products.
After all that work, it can be maddening to see only 2-3 likes per post – and yes, we know at least one of those likes is from your personal profile or your really supportive mom.
So, how do you engage with your social media followers? We pulled together some reasons your followers can’t connect with your content.
You don’t post enough – or you post too often.
Not to sound like Goldilocks here, but there is a bit of a sweet spot for the number of monthly posts you generate. If you don’t post enough, you will fall out of the algorithm (we know, the dreaded algorithm…), and your followers won’t see anything. On the contrary, if you post too much, you will start to annoy your audience. We recommend researching how often other companies post on social media in your industry and adjusting accordingly.
Your content is too self-serving.
We get it. You have a business to run, and your goal is to sell a product or service. Unfortunately, our society is highly aware of companies on social media, and they also know you have a product or service to sell. By all means, use your platform as a tool to share information about your business, but try to incorporate some resources, entertainment, and quick nuggets of information your audience will benefit from quickly. We recommend industry-related fun facts or the occasional photo of your office dog. People love that stuff!
Make an effort to engage.
This may seem obvious, but you need to reciprocate the love to see engagement on your social media channels. If someone comments on your post, that is your ticket to start a conversation! Even a simple thank you to a compliment is enough to boost your post ranking and make your content more visible.
To put it in the simplest terms, don’t leave a comment hanging. Respond, and show your followers you care about them and appreciate their thoughts.
Understand your audience.
Social media marketing is about understanding who is reading your content. Knowing your audience is the #1 rule when drafting monthly posts. You might not see engagement because your followers may not like your content. Attention spans are short, and if something doesn’t resonate with a person within seconds, it’s no longer a priority for viewing.
So, take some time and try to apply these concepts to your next round of social media posts. When it comes down to it, social media is about research, trial, and error.
