Keywords are the way in which any search engine can identify the topics or relativity of your page to what the consumer is searching for. In order to choose the best keywords and increase discoverability of a business’ webpage, some research can be useful.

As part of most marketing strategies to increase search engine optimization (SEO), keyword research is used to find the search terms that are most often entered into search engines. This data can be used to modify website links, titles, and content to better match with consumers on the web.

Performing keyword research doesn’t have to be complicated. Start with creating a list of terms already used to describe the service or product on the website. These words are often used repetitively throughout the business’ page, so they should be easy to find. Then expand this list by using research tools available online. Many of these sites are available for free and can help increase the keyword list in a short amount of time. 

Finally, after expanding the keyword terms, it’s time to refine. A good SEO rule of thumb is to have 2-3 keywords per page. Refining the list of keywords can come from searching competitors pages, other keyword resources, and simplifying the terms already used on the business’ website. Making the pages clear and concise will make it easier for search engines to pick out relevant pieces of content and help users understand the purpose of the page quickly.

While its effectiveness is certainly obvious, keyword research is often overlooked because it sounds complicated and time consuming, but setting aside just an hour to complete this task can create a large impact on SEO results and drive traffic to a business’ website.
