Websites: The Online Storefront

Have you ever looked at the outside of a store and thought, “I’m not sure this is entirely what I was looking for…”

A website can evoke the same reactions if not properly set-up and maintained. After all, a website is the digital storefront for a business.

Website design is a significant factor in a business’ search engine optimization (SEO) plan, or at least it should be. In relation to design, the site should have branding colors and logos, so individuals know they’re in the right place. Imagine showing up at Target, but the logo and all the details outside of the building were purple. Wouldn’t you question whether you were in the right place? A website should reflect the characteristics already known about the business and make it easily identifiable.

It’s not just about the cover pages either. The information on the website should be easily organized and flow in such a way that users know where to find important pieces. Just like a brick and mortar business, the easier it is to find what you’re looking for, the more likely you are to return.

Organization is not just for human users either. To optimize a page’s discoverability, a search engine must easily crawl a site and identify keywords, user features, and more. The better designed and maintained a website, the more likely it will be moved toward the top of the search results driving even more traffic to the page.

The look, feel, and usability of a business’ website can determine whether or not a potential client is converted to a sale. Once a website is shown in the search results, a user will click to the page they were looking for, but if a site isn’t set up in an easy-to-use manner, consumers may get frustrated and decide to go elsewhere. The organization and even the transformation of desktop to mobile configurations can change how usable a site is and how long potential customers will interact with the page.

In summary, a website needs to be both visually appealing and easy to navigate in order to increase traffic and interactions from potential customers. When users can find what they need and be confident in the material being presented to them through a business’ website, the more likely they are to return to it or recommend it to others.
